Weekly Announcements for the week of 4-26-2026

4TH SUNDAY OF EASTER 04-26-2026

The image of Christ as shepherd might seem outdated when and where sheep and shepherds are not common. Even in his day, this talk by Jesus of being a shepherd would have been met with ridicule and scorn. Yet we modern folks continue to be attracted to these images and the Biblical passages that lift them up. Don’t we all long for guidance, protection, and strength in a world full of much chaos and confusion, dangerous situations and dangerous people? Don’t we all need a GOOD Shepherd to lead us, give us life, and assure us of love that does not abandon us? And might we then become “junior shepherds” in order to protect and guide, rescue and heal, feed and to assure others?

He’s not Jesus, or a doctor, or a king, or a real peace maker, or a good shepherd. He’s also not stable or a genius, so please don’t drink the bleach. He insisted on telling his own versions of the “truth” over and over again, convinced that enough people would accept or surrender to the flavor of the week he offered. But now it doesn’t work as well as it did. Many all over the world are tired, worried, and disappointed. Both real and imagined power and authority seem to be slipping. “Friends” are drifting and staff are being dumped. Some are embarrassed that they believed. Health is crumbling, perhaps faster than what is admitted. It is a great comfort, in both good times and bad, to have Jesus upon the throne, to call upon Jesus as the Lord of our life, and to surrender our lives humbly and completely under his kingship, under his management, his presence and power. Today we celebrate a different kind of king. In turning to Jesus – who humbles himself, suffers, and dies on a cross – we have also found a kingdom “not of this world”, a new community where sacrificial love makes all the difference.
