PENTECOST 16 09-28-2025
Danger ahead. The prophet Amos warns his people that overwhelming wealth, overindulgent comfort, and overconfident complacency are the perfect lure for God’s anger and judgment. The Christian missionary Paul warns Timothy that the love of money, an unquenchable striving after wealth, and a false trust in life’s fading treasures and fleeting pleasures for security will always add up to not enough investment in faith and fidelity towards God. And will Jesus ever stop bothering us with all this talk about the proper use of wealth, the dangers of greed, and the idolatry of placing our faith, hope, and love in money? Today he tells a story about how the gap of a gate on earth between the haves and the have-nots can become the great chasm between hell and heaven in eternity. The warning this morning is clear – don’t become so wrapped up with “the good life” pimped by both the greedy and the envious in this world that you are SURPRISED BY HELL! May your own life decision and followed paths lead you to and not from the Kingdom of God.
God knows our gratitude and generosity or our grumbling and greed.
