Weekly Announcements for: 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER 05-25-2025
6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER 05-25-2025
Welcome. Many people are troubled and afraid. Jesus offers us assurance that, no matter the
size of the struggle, we can trust in the presence, peace, power, and promise of God in Christ
Jesus. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid. God loves and
forgives and embraces you. Facing his own death with courage and trust, Jesus bestows
inner serenity and outward strength that the world simply cannot give Joy will rise again. If
you are hearing this as a fresh new word, open your life to Jesus Christ. If you already know
this, think where you might find somebody still searching for true peace and real hope. Be a
witness.

MEMORIAL DAY HOLIDAY. On Monday our nation remembers, honors, and mourns the military personnel
and some attached civilians who died in service to our nation, whether overseas or in training and service in the
U.S. In the midst of summer first fun that the weekend also represents, we should take time to reflect and offer
humble gratitude. Death in military service is the ultimate sacrifice that Memorial Day honors. Many
Americans were troubled when Eric Trump posted a photo of family members last Memorial Day and tweeted
that they all – father on down – had made the ultimate sacrifice and had given up more than everyone else,
“everything to Save America”. Really? Pastor Neil never served in the military and wasn’t drafted during the
Vietnam War. But one U.S. President – who received five deferments for bone spurs to avoid service during the
Vietnam War era and has only served as “Commander in Chief” – apparently called those who died in service,
or who were physically, mentally, and emotionally wounded in service, “losers” and “suckers”. Let’s show
more gratitude than that!
Today is the 5th anniversary of the murder of George Floyd, a Black American man, arrested by police for
using an apparent counterfeit $20 bill to purchase cigarettes at a convenience store in Minneapolis. He was
murdered by suffocation, and he was killed by police brutality and by the failure of other police officers to
intervene. In the first year that followed, 17 states banned or restricted chokeholds and other neck restraints by
the police. Quite a number of past and present St. Peter’s members and their relatives had been or are still police
officers. It is a difficult and dangerous job. But to the knowledge of your Pastors, none of them were found
guilty of homicide or police brutality. The work against racism, the work toward justice both continue, quite
slowly.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social
well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others,
and make healthy choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence
through adulthood. Sometimes persons are not aware of their own mental illness or the illness of others…
depending upon their life position and resources, there is a real danger to self and others.
