PENTECOST 12                                                                                                                                                                             08-11-2024

Hunger is everywhere. Jesus makes a bold claim: he is THE BREAD OF LIFE. It gets bolder. He proclaims that those who come to him will never hunger, those who believe in him will never thirst.  And it gets bolder. He insists that those who eat of this bread will live forever. Then his message becomes completely unbelievable. Not only does Jesus claim that he is the living bread from heaven, but also that the bread he gives is his own flesh. Literal-minded people won’t easily grasp this. But the Spirit works through word and image to draw and drag others to receptive faith. Have you learned yet what your deepest hunger really is? Open your eyes, mind, heart, and life to the new possibilities and stunning promises that Jesus offers! Food does not fill every hunger.

TODAY

10:00AM         + PENTECOST SEASON WORSHIP + (in person and online)

Confirming her faith in Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior, and being confirmed by the Holy Spirit as a follower of Christ is Iyanna Washington. Only by God’s grace can we renounce the forces of evil and the power of sin… only with God’s help can we walk in faithful discipleship. May the Lord, who gave her new birth in the waters of Holy Baptism and made her a member of the Body of Christ, the Church, continue to lead and guide her through the next steps of her life’s journey as she walks in faith and serves faithfully!

PEACE   +  REST   +  ETERNAL LIFE

She was from Haiti and became a regular participant in Sunday worship and our Whole Foods ministry these past few months. Now we are thanking God for the life and faith of Simone Delva, who recently completed her earthly journey while down in Florida. Any local worship service is pending.

The miracle of caring and sharing.

Beyond support of our 2024 Budget ($179,787 is what we envision spending this year) are various special opportunities for giving on behalf of others. They include:

ELCA World Hunger Appeal (meeting international, national, and local hunger and poverty needs)

$0 last week, $1,698 received to date in 2024.

Lutheran Charities Appeal (assisting three local social ministry organizations – KenCrest Services, Lutheran

Settlement House, and Gemma Services – that serve thousands of neighbors with various needs)

$25 last week, $951.50 received to date in 2024.

Mission Offering  (For July – December we have selected a local ministry, the Sisters of Saint Joseph Refugee Housing Project, introduced to us by our young adult member Andrea Wood. Their work includes transitional housing for refugee resettlement, family support services, and a distribution center with needed household items and furniture. This Mission Offering, other monetary gifts, new and gently used items (they have a “wish list”, see the Pastors) and volunteer opportunities are all ways to respond to refugees in need with genuine love.) $85 last week and received to date, ends December 31.
