CONFESSION OF OUR SINS:        Judy Echols + Shola Oyemola

L   Those who love their life in a self-serving way will lose it.
Those who focus on this world’s fading treasures and fleeting pleasures will falter and fail.
In this season of Lent we journey with Jesus toward his death on a cross.
In this season of Lent Jesus journeys with us as we seek to die to our old habits and our destructive ways.
We have come for this hour to be delivered from temptation and guilt, to receive mercy and a new spirit.

C    Eternal God, I confess that I am only human, created by you.
I have come from dust, and someday I will return to dust. My physical life on earth will end.
Eternal God, I confess that I am also a sinner.
My thoughts and my words, my attitudes and my actions all reveal my failures. I pray for your mercy.
Eternal God, I confess that I am also an unsure saint.
I sometimes look for an easier gospel, a lighter cross, a less demanding Savior, and a cheaper ticket to heaven. I need your renewal as I seek to be faithful.
Here I am, Lord. Forgive my sins. Revive my spirit. Give me new life. Please!  Amen.

L   Sisters, brothers, the seed that dies brings new life.
Just as the grain must fall into the earth and undergo a death of form and substance, so also was it necessary for
Jesus – and so also was Jesus willing – to die in order to bring about the harvest of salvation, the gift of new life.
Through the death and resurrection of (+) Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and loved, empowered and sent.
Let us live faithfully and love fervently!  Amen.

OPENING SONG:    “What Can Wash Away My Sin?”      Carol Lee

THE PRAYER OF THE DAY:          Shola Oyemola

Steadfast, faithful, covenant God, renew us this morning with your Holy Spirit,
so that our hearts will know you, our lips will praise you, and our hands will serve you.
We pray that we might take the risk of faith and discover the joy of discipleship.  Amen.

+   Renewal Through God’s Word   +

FIRST READING:   JEREMIAH 31:31-34   [God’s fifth covenant: God’s will to be written in the hearts of all God’s people.] – Maliek Patterson

31:31 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah.

31:32 It will not be like the covenant that I made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt–a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the LORD.

31:33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.

31:34 No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, “Know the LORD,” for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, says the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and remember their sin no more.

SECOND READING:   HEBREWS 5:5-10   [Christ was God’s obedient priest who submitted himself as the sacrifice to bring us salvation.]        Andrea Crawford

5:5 So also Christ did not glorify himself in becoming a high priest, but was appointed by the one who said to him, “You are my Son, today I have begotten you”;

5:6 as he says also in another place, “You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.”

5:7 In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to the one who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

5:8 Although he was a Son, he learned obedience through what he suffered;

5:9 and having been made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him,

5:10 having been designated by God a high priest according to the order of Melchizedek.

GOSPEL VERSE:   “Lord, let my heart be good soil, open to the seed of your word.           Charlotte Webb

Lord, let my heart be good soil, where love can grow and peace is understood.
When my heart is hard, break the stone away.
When my heart is cold, warm it with the day.
When my heart is lost, lead me on your way.
Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart, Lord, let my heart be good soil.”

THE GOSPELJOHN 12:20-33   [Christ the dying seed, a “dead end” to a new beginning for us, for our world.] – Regina Edwards

12:20 Now among those who went up to worship at the festival were some Greeks.

12:21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and said to him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.”

12:22 Philip went and told Andrew; then Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus.

12:23 Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

12:24 Very truly, I tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears much fruit.

12:25 Those who love their life lose it, and those who hate their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

12:26 Whoever serves me must follow me, and where I am, there will my servant be also. Whoever serves me, the Father will honor.

12:27 “Now my soul is troubled. And what should I say–‘ Father, save me from this hour’? No, it is for this reason that I have come to this hour.

12:28 Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, “I have glorified it, and I will glorify it again.”

12:29 The crowd standing there heard it and said that it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”

12:30 Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not for mine.

12:31 Now is the judgment of this world; now the ruler of this world will be driven out.

12:32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”

12:33 He said this to indicate the kind of death he was to die.

AN AFFIRMATION OF OUR FAITH:             Darlene Johnson

We believe that God has created this world,
                                             has created humanity,
  has created each of us.
We believe that God so loved the world,
  so loved all people,
  so loved us,
that God gave Jesus, the Son, to save us from sin and death,
to save us from the ways of this world and the Devil in it,                                                                    to save us from ourselves.
We believe that Jesus suffered for us in his living,
sacrificed for us in his dying, and
was raised for us in resurrection victory.
We believe that the resurrection victory of Jesus is our resurrection victory,
our only hope and salvation, and                                                                                                                   our invitation to new, abundant, and everlasting life.
We believe that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen.

OFFERING   [Unless a grain of wheat falls to the ground and takes on new life, it remains just a single grain. So let us seek to die in our own selfishness in order to blossom and bear fruit, to serve God and to love others.]

OFFERING PRAYER (from PSALM 51):

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from your presence, or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and sustain me with your bountiful spirit.
Then I will teach other sinners your ways; and I will eagerly sing of your goodness.  Amen.

CLOSING SONG:    “I Want Jesus to Walk with Me”                Trudi Wright

  • I want Jesus to walk with me…            I want Jesus to walk with me.

All along my pilgrim journey,            Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

  1. In my trials, Lord, walk with me…            In my trials, Lord, walk with me.

When my heart is almost breaking,            Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

  • When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me…        When I’m in trouble, Lord, walk with me.

When my head is bowed in sorrow,        Lord, I want Jesus to walk with me.

THE BENEDICTION by the Pastor… God calls us to “return home” to faithful discipleship!
